In part 3 we talked about how religion plays a large part in Utah's dance. Next we will discuss how art appreciation and education play in Utah's dance community.
Being from Utah it is no surprise to see that everyone in Utah is dancing. It has a state core curriculum in dance starting at the K-12 level. At the college level, dance plays a significant role of the states leading universities. Utah Valley University is the only public university in the US that offers a degree in ballroom dance.
Scott Absell, the ballroom dance program director at Utah Valley University say many studios in Utah will teach ballroom dancing at a young age. This is in part to the area's conservative, religious environment. It is a good place for boys and girls to get together and socialize. BYU's dance company has won two first-place awards at the prestigious Blackpool Championship in England in 2010. The University of Utah contributes strongly to dance as well with its top-ranked modern dance major.
