Thousands of people flock to Konya, Turkey, each year for a week of festivities and ceremonies commemorating the death of Jalaladdin Rumi, a 13th-century Islamic poet, scholar, and Sufi mystic. Rather than mourning his death, the celebrations honor his followers' belief in his oneness with God. The main feature of the "Sheb-i Arus" or "night of the union," is an enchanting ritual performed by the dervishes of the Mevlevi order — more commonly known as the whirling dervishes.
