The "Mother of Contemporary African Dance," Germaine Acogny, continues her conversation with Pina Bausch. In March 2020, the final pre-pandemic rehearsal for Pina Bausch's The Rite of Spring became a streaming video success named Dancing at Dusk, starring dancers from 14 African countries.
This recast Rite made its live debut in four European locations last fall, accompanying common ground[s], a duet choreographed by and for Germaine Acogny and acclaimed Bausch dancer Malou Airaudo, who was a founding member of Bausch's Tanztheater Wuppertal in 1973. The double bill's journey continues this month at London's Sadler's Wells, which developed it in collaboration with the Pina Bausch Foundation and Acogny's global dance center in Senegal, École des Sables.
